Fae
][attr="class","species"]
[attr="class","speciesimage1"]FAE
[attr="class","species2"]The fae are wily and changeable, a paradoxical combination of passionate and apathetic. Since they cannot lie, they have become particularly tricky to compensate, and will take advantage of literal interpretations and double meanings wherever they can. They can seem anywhere from proud to narcissistic, and are rarely sincere or affectionate by human standards. However, they are also extremely eloquent and grandiose, and the displays of affection or emotion that they do make will be dramatic and often impulsive, due to their capricious nature.
[break][attr="class","species3"]Appearance
[attr="class","species2"]The fae are all incredibly beautiful by human standards, though they all have somewhat more “feminine” characteristics from a mortal perspective. They tend to be slightly taller than humans, very slender and willowy, with catlike eyes, long lashes, and narrow, pointed ears. They have very angular bone structure and high cheekbones, and little body fat or muscle; the women tend to have flatter chests and hips, and the men have lean, elegant builds.
[break][break]
While all of the fae share these characteristics, along with non-human characteristics such as horns, fangs, and tails (or scales and gills for the Undersea fae), there are slight differences between the Courts.
[break]
- North Court: Thick hair and thin lashes, mouths made for stoicism, steady hands, bodies like ice sculptures, eyes that look transparent in the sun.[break]
- South Court: Soft limbs, a slight golden glow, sun-kissed skin, full lips, upturned noses, dimples for faking smiles.[break]
- East Court: Blindingly white teeth, eyes that seem uncertain of their hue, vibrant colors, sharp edges, dazzling and difficult to focus on, hair with a constant shine.[break]
- West Court: Eyelids always on the brink of closing, hesitant movements, earth tones, long fingers, curls and waves, never the same twice.[break]
- Undersea: Spilled paint, sleek and gleaming, dark hair, silk, luminescence, long limbs, pupils always dilated.[break]
- High Court: Forever in flux with the land, cruelly beautiful, precious metals and jewel tones, limbs like roots, constantly wind-stirred.

[attr="class","species3"]Aging
[attr="class","species2"]The fae do not die of old age, and they are resistant to human illnesses. They age at roughly the same rate as humans until ages of 18 to 21, during which time their aging slows rapidly. They will age at a rate of roughly one ‘human’ year every 25 years until they appear to be in their forties, at which point they essentially stop aging.
[break][attr="class","species3"]Weaknesses
[attr="class","species2"]As previously stated, the fae cannot lie. Another well-known weakness is the ability to control a fae by use of their true name; these "true names" are not given, but known only to the fae themselves, and can be used to control them by anyone who learns the name. The key to this control is that words have weight-- so the command must use their true name and will be followed to the letter. Using them, therefore, takes some planning, especially given the wiliness of the fae and how much they hate to be controlled. Also, they are burned by iron; for the first few seconds of contact, it will induce only extreme heat at the point of contact, but after that it creates real burns. Certain herbs are dangerous to the fae: they cannot approach St. John’s Wort or yarrow closer than seven steps, and rowan berries can be worn to provide immunity to their enchantments. Also, salt can be used to remove enchantments. The fae can die of injury and poison in the same way as humans.
[break][attr="class","species3"]Marriage
[attr="class","species2"]"...Is what brings us together today." No, not really—the fae rarely marry, since marriage is seen as a deal or bargain, which they are bound to by nature. When they do marry, fidelity is not highly prized or expected, but there is no concept of divorce in the Faewild. Marriage connects the natures of the pair involved; this can include a sharing of magical power or specialties, as well as a more attuned sense for the other's thoughts and feelings.

Half-fae
][attr="class","species"]
[attr="class","speciesimage2"]HALF-FAE
[attr="class","species2"]Half-fae are the result of a coupling between one fae parent and one mortal parent—a relatively rare occurrence in the Faewild. While it is not entirely uncommon for the fae to seduce and have children with mortals, it is very rare for these children to find their way to Faerie. Most half-fae who do live in the Faewild are the children of changeling mortals, brought in to work as servants or support fae bloodlines. As such, they are viewed by the majority of the fae as oddities and best and lower-class citizens at worst.
[break][attr="class","species3"]Appearance and Aging
[attr="class","species2"]Half-fae have a more similar lifespan to humans, living 200 years at absolute maximum. Their apparent aging will stop at a slightly later point; half-fae can develop lined faces and gray-threaded hair that are foreign to the fae. They will present with some mix of fae and mortal traits, the specifics of which vary—some half-fae have rounded ears but lighter builds, where others may have pointed ears but more solid, earthly features. One consistency in their appearances is that they generally lack the non-human traits of the full fae—tails, horns, scales, gills for the Undersea, et cetera.
[break][attr="class","species3"]Abilities and Weaknesses
[attr="class","species2"]The weaknesses and abilities of half-fae are, as one might expect, mixed. Like full-blooded fae, they cannot lie. However, they are immune to iron burns and the herbs that ward off full-blooded fae. Due to their mortal half, they are susceptible to control by glamours and enchanted food, such as faerie fruit, though it is slightly more difficult than it would be with a full-blooded mortal. The other side of this is that half-fae have generally weaker magical abilities, and magic does not come as naturally to them.

Changelings
][attr="class","species"]
[attr="class","speciesimage3"]CHANGELINGS
[attr="class","species2"]The term “changeling” technically refers to two different things, since a changeling is the result of a human child and a fae child being swapped. Both the human child raised by the fae, and the fae child raised by mortals, are considered changelings.
[break][attr="class","species3"]The Fae Child
[attr="class","species2"]For the fae child, the outward expressions of their heritage tend to be muted or suppressed when they’re raised in the mortal world; this tends to stunt the growth of such things as horns and claws, while other odd features—pointed ears, catlike eyes, et cetera—will be subtle enough to be brushed off as oddities. The fae traits in their nature and personality, however, are not as easily hidden or ignored.
[break][attr="class","species3"]The Mortal Child
[attr="class","species2"]The mortal children are generally taken either for use as servants, or in order to support the bloodlines of the fae, who are not very fertile. Fae children will often be swapped out if they are seen as deformed or otherwise defective, largely for this reason. However, the reasonings for making this switch can be weak and seemingly trivial, given that the fae will seek any excuse to cause mischief.
[/PTab={background:transparent;}]
[PTab=
Mortals
][attr="class","species"]
[attr="class","speciesimage4"]MORTALS
[attr="class","species2"]Mortals, of course, age as we are accustomed to—but only while in the mortal world. If a mortal lives in Faerie, they will age at the same rate as the fae. However, if they ever return to the mortal world, this aging will catch up with them; depending on the length of their time in the Faewild, humans in the flower of youth have returned to the mortal world, only to turn decrepit and crumble into dust. Mortals can, of course, lie, which is why they are often kept as servants by the fae and used as spies. They are seen as lower-class citizens in Faerie, however, and are unable to do magic unless a fae bargain affords them the ability. They can also be controlled if they give away their names, similar to the way that true names can be used to control the fae.
[break][attr="class","species3"]The Mortal World
[attr="class","species2"]The mortal world is to the west of the Faewild, so one must pass through the West Court, the place of transitions, in order to pass between. Many a wayward mortal has accidentally stumbled into a faerie ring, the places that the border between is thinnest, and found themselves in Faerie. Most mortals do not know of or believe in the existence of Faerie, though there are those superstitious few who suspect that it exists.
